I was recently a panelist at the ACS26 conference in New Zealand, put on by The Access Control Collective and hosted by Lee Odess, and was reminded why I love our industry.

Speaking with other attendees, I was impressed by the caliber of people in our field. And it is not just at this conference. I see it at GSX, ISC West, Intersec, and whenever I travel to events – hard working people creatively solving problems. I often hear from colleagues in other fields about their struggles finding employees with good work ethics. This has not been my experience in our security industry.
|
The first evening of the conference, I was privileged to have a lovely chat with Sir William Gallagher and his wife, Lady Judy, about building his company. He joined his father’s ten person company in 1962 and built it into today’s Gallagher: a global company with 1500+ people. He spoke about wanting to manufacture every aspect of his products.
I saw this on my tour of Gallagher’s plant. While the breadth of their facility was impressive, what stood out to me were the people. Everyone was engaged, happy, and genuinely interested in company improvement. Culture like that doesn’t happen by accident – Sir William built it.

Maybe security and safety work just attracts good people who create good culture. But whatever the reason, many of you reading this are part of what makes it special. That theme ran through the talks given over the course of the event. Even with private equity acquisitions, the threat of intrusive ID tracking, and AI looming over the security industry, people repeatedly said their top business concern was having solid relationships with their colleagues.
During my panel, I noted that trust is built a penny at a time and lost in dollars through unscrupulous behavior. Everyone understood. This exact sentiment was even repeated at the close of the event.
Looking at industry leaders like Sir William and the new generation coming up in access control, I’m confident we’re on a good path. I feel blessed to work in a field where I truly trust my partner network. Beyond good engineering and strong security, I can trust the caliber of people they have hired and know they will do things the right way.
That’s worth appreciating and being grateful for. This is exactly the community we’re bringing together at our Partner Summit in San Diego, Nov. 4-6. We still have a couple spaces available and we would love to have you join us.
Be well,
|
– Dave

OSHA requires a business’ Emergency Action Plan to include procedures to account for all employees after an evacuation. Unfortunately, this applies to “fire or other emergency“ events – and life unfortunately can be a whole lot more complicated.
Worse, a global 2024 risk management study found that roughly 20% of organizations had no written emergency preparedness plan.
This blog is designed to give employers some food for thought to consider for different types of emergencies, both when writing their plan and thinking about the types of hazards that they should consider on the path to keeping their employees safe.

At most secure manufacturing sites, safety teams running an emergency drill have no easy way to confirm who has reached a muster point. As a result, they are limited to paper rosters and manual headcounts, which are slow and prone to error. An equipment manufacturer in Poland closed that gap by implementing an XPressEntry handheld reader integrated directly into its existing Nedap AEOS access control system, giving safety teams a live view of who is accounted for using the DESFire cards and Nedap Mobile Credentials personnel already carry.
