2005: Telaeris Founded
Telaeris, Inc. was founded on May 3, 2005, in San Diego, California, by David Carta and Jose Flores. The company began with a focus on contactless smartcards and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, targeting automation and identification challenges in enterprise environments.
The goal at the start was to provide “Innovative Solutions and Rapid Development” in the RFID space. Incredibly, in our first 6 months we landed two very large clients, BP and the smartcard supplier to the Chilean Metro.
2005–2007: Laying the Groundwork with Contracted RFID Innovation
- Provided millions of smartcards and RFID tags to customers in the Americas.
- Built XPressTools – RFID enabled tool and equipment check in/out software.
- Optimized RFID deployment for commercial bus ticket validation.
- Custom development of refinery-specific web-enabled software
- Material tracking and staging solution
- On-premises 10-computer workstation trailers for turnaround management. (pictured right)
During this period, Telaeris worked to expand both our smartcard and RFID consulting services by focusing on taking care of our customers at every step. The strategy resulted in significant growth.
2008–2010: Breakthrough Into Security Systems
- Sold smartcard division to focus business on custom software and hardware solutions.
- Deployed high-impact solutions for multiple British Petroleum refineries, saving millions of dollars by creating efficiencies. Solutions included:
- Piping and valve specification system (pictured right)
Monitored 500 workers into dangerous confined spaces
- Remote employee verification at temporary gates.
- Built Multiple Third Party RFID Reader SDKs
- Introduced first security and safety products
- MACS Cart – Remote Parking Lot Validation of Employees into PACS (pictured below)
- XPressProx reader – industry’s first ultra-small RFID reader for security
- XPressFreedom – Ethernet to Wiegand converter.
- XPressEntry – Handheld Entry/Exit & Occupancy tracking system working
- Strategic partnership with Datastrip to sell XPressEntry WinCE handhelds into security.
Selling our smartcard division allowed Telaeris to focus more on our “Innovative Solutions”, and our customers responded by providing us with more opportunities. We also took advantage of this time to build our own commercial products, with the idea that solutions could be used beyond just our clients. The recession was not obvious.
2011–2012: Transition from Consulting to Selling Software and Hardware Products
- RFID System deployments continue
- Inspection solution for safety-critical rigging equipment.
- Deployed high-volume anti-counterfeiting solutions.
- Environmental trash recycling system
- Secure high value / high security assets
- Active RFID-enabled hotel occupancy tracking, with HVAC integration
- Continued Support and Light expansion of Refinery Solutions
- Business finance forecasting software
- Job applicant tracking software
- Expansion of piping and valve + material tracking systems
- Expanded XPressEntry capabilities and footprint
- XPressProx integrated into Datastrip handheld.
- First PACS integrations deployed with flexible SQL imports and exports.
- First Events mode deployed
- First outdoor entry/exit ticket station
- Start of strategic selling to security integrators.
- Started designing our own custom-built handheld
During this period, Telaeris started to gain a foothold as a provider of security solutions, but at the same time, the global recession started to affect many suppliers and partners. BP specifically stopped funding outside contractors due to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Additionally, many companies we worked with in the RFID supply chain went out of business. Finally, the three main handheld suppliers (Datastrip, MaxID, Roper) that we worked with for XPressEntry closed their doors, pushing us to build our own RFID-enabled WinCE/ Windows Mobile device. Due to the very difficult business climate at the end of 2012, Telaeris made the strategic choice to focus primarily on XPressEntry.
2013–2016: Full Pivot to Focus on XPressEntry in Security and Safety Space
- Launched the XPressAT870 handheld badge reader capable of reading 20 different security badges.
The SmartAT870 - XPressEntry became an easy mobile handheld solution for end users, using SQL imports from PACS databases and our XPressFreedom board tied to panels.
- Created tight integrations to Lenel OnGuard, Galaxy Control Systems, Honeywell EBI, and Software House C-Cure800, allowing real-time occupancy tracking for mustering.
- Expanded XPressEntry to be able to use long-range UHF RFID, enabling access for vehicles, ski-lifts, and more.
- Completed a 2 year contract with Camp Pendleton 1 year ahead of schedule assisting with their asset management requirements.
- XPressEntry LiveMode showcased our first entry into Android apps.
Telaeris fully bought into working tightly with system integrators (SI) and value added resellers (VARS) at this period. This resulted in our being introduced to many more end customers, but those customers also being able to be better supported by local representation. Our decision to have our own ruggedized handheld became a product differentiator and began to cement our reputation as the premier handheld used for access control.
2017–2022: Global Expansion and Market Leadership
- Launched the XPID100 series of rugged GMS-certified Android handheld devices.
- Certified compatibility with 15+ access control systems worldwide, allowing XPressEntry handhelds to be deployed broadly.

The company leaned into owning the hardware design with the XPID100. This handheld received a great response from our customers. Being fully in control of the server software, app software, and hardware provided us with the capability to meet many custom requests from our integration channel and end users, including custom badge support. Telaeris significantly deepened our relationships with access control system software providers to have deep integrations into their systems.
