Fast Features Ep. 8 — MRZ Scan w/ XPressEntry

This episode of XPressEntry Fast Features covers XPressEntry’s latest function: the MRZ Scan. With this feature, users can enroll and scan their passport or international identity card as easily as a badge or barcode. This can be incredibly helpful as a method to quickly enroll visitors or capture their information for re-validation where they have been seen before.

In the XPressEntry Fast Features video series, our engineering team showcases the latest updates and improvements built into XPressEntry. These videos provide a hands-on look into features used for:

Hi Chris, I hear we have a new feature with XPressEntry.

Chris 0:15
Yeah! We set up a feature to scan the MRZ data off of identity cards or passports for a customer who needed to enroll contractors onto their site and get them in very quickly and then be able to scan them in and out very quickly.

David 0:33
Fantastic. So MRZ is Machine Readable Zone. That’s on every international passport, you’ve got two lines on the bottom of the passport that look kind of like this. And for most identity cards you have three lines. And most international cards, if you have an international identity card, you also have this three line MRZ. So that’s that’s something that’s very common. Now is this enrolling visitors or just enrolling new users?

Chris 1:04
Right now this is enrolling visitors but it can be set up to enroll new users.

David 1:08
Fantastic. Show me how this works please.

Chris 1:10
Alright so we need to come into the XPressEntry settings under reader profiles. We need to enable the MRZ scan functionality. You come in here you check the use MRZ scan box and you will get a neat little passport icon on the device. You click on the passport and it’ll pull up the camera on your device. You’ll need to give it permission the first time. I’ve already done that, but you’ll hit allow and then you’ll need to scan an MRZ data. We’re going to scan an old passport of one of your children. So that’s Adam’s passport and we’ll take a picture of it, hopefully of baby Adam. And voila, we go down we hit done and Adam will get entered into the system.

David 1:55
Oh so that user, the username, the user information, and his ID got all sent, along with the picture, all got sent to XPressEntry super fast.

Chris 2:06
Yeah, and then we can scan him again. If we need to exit him at the end of the day or in the middle of the day, you can just scan his MRZ again and it will- you can scan him in and out now. He’s enrolled. His ID card or his passport becomes his badge to enter and exit the site.

David 2:26
Super cool, and how did we get this MRZ integrated so quickly?

Chris 2:30
The IDScan.net libraries, which we had already integrated for their driver’s license parsing technology via bar codes.

David 2:38
Fantastic well thank you very much, I appreciate it.

Chris 2:42
Yup, bye bye.
