Introduction
This case study delves into the experience of a multinational mining company headquartered in the United States. The company aimed to standardize and improve their emergency mustering procedures across various international sites, while also leveraging the capabilities of their existing LenelS2 OnGuard access control system for accurate occupancy counts.
Challenges
Mining operations present a unique set of challenges with both underground and open-pit mines, as well as a number of roasting facilities, a flotation plant, oxide mills, as well as office buildings. Effectively accounting for workers during an emergency evacuation can prove to be especially challenging due to the sprawling nature of mining facilities, constantly changing occupancy with a large workforce, hazardous work environments, and numerous emergency assembly areas. These diverse environments called for a versatile system capable of quickly verifying the safety of workers during an evacuation, while providing the flexibility of a solution that enables mustering capabilities from any location, all while meeting stringent safety and regulatory compliance requirements.
Solution
Knowing the mining company’s requirements and existing LenelS2 OnGuard access control system, the company’s security integrator, Convergint Technologies, recommended XPressEntry as a solution, citing many successful implementations at other enterprise customer facilities with similar needs and infrastructure. Telaeris is a certified LenelS2 OAAP partner with a native and seamless XPressEntry to OnGuard integration. XPressEntry would both simplify and accelerate their extensive emergency mustering needs while also providing a variety of other access control and badge verification functionalities that would prove to be valuable across their LenelS2 OnGuard Enterprise system.
XPressEntry Server: The XPressEntry server software enables the seamless integration to LenelS2 OnGuard via Open Access, providing the admin console for all XPressEntry functionality, including: occupancy and mustering views, user management, live data feeds, reporting, and configuring 15+ handheld reader functionalities.
XPressEntry Handheld Badge Readers: The XPressEntry handheld readers help security and safety teams quickly muster employees during an emergency evacuation and maintain facility occupancy information. Additionally, on an enterprise level the organization adopted XPressEntry for access control, confined space management, and meal tracking functionalities.
Roll Call From Remote Locations – Depending on the size of the facility, environment, and number of personnel and visitors onsite, there can be multiple emergency evacuation locations on-site. Providing security and essential emergency personnel with XPressEntry handhelds provides the ability to quickly verify who is safe and accounted for at any mustering location, while providing the flexibility and mobility of a wireless reader.
Live Tracking / Mobile Roster Lists – XPressEntry keeps a running tally of all personnel (employees, contractors, visitors, etc.), their safety status, and keeps all mustering handhelds in sync. A badge scan on a Telaeris mustering reader will alert all other locations of personnel safety, eliminating the need for assigned mustering zones.
Online / Offline Functionality – If cellular and WiFi connectivity are lost, XPressEntry will continue to record all status updates and store them locally in offline mode, ensuring that no personnel and visitor badge scans are lost. Once connectivity is restored, all stored transactions will automatically sync with the XPressEntry server and access control system, keeping everyone and everything up to date.
Notify First Responders of Who’s Missing – When the first responders arrive onsite, providing timely information of missing persons can be a matter of life or death. Using XPressEntry, security and essential emergency personnel can provide first-responders the names, ID photos, and the last recorded locations of missing personnel or visitors onsite. This gives first responders the information they need to prioritize resources and focus in areas that can help save lives.
Benefits and Conclusion
To date, the mining company has implemented over 100 XPressEntry handheld readers to fulfill their various mustering and access control requirements at 7 sites across the globe.
XPressEntry handheld readers have enhanced their LenelS2 OnGuard access control system enterprise wide, delivering new convenience, flexibility, and functionality to safety and security professionals never before possible. XPressEntry is an industry-leading emergency evacuation and employee mustering solution that ensures everyone is safely accounted for during a true emergency, improving evacuations to meet safety and OSHA / regulatory compliance. With the implementation of XPressEntry, Telaeris’ customers can run faster evacuation drills, are confident and prepared for real world emergencies, and are enabled to expand the functionalities of their LenelS2 OnGuard systems.
