Applies to: XPressEntry integrated with Lenel OnGuard
Symptom: Sync or API calls to OnGuard fail with:
401 UnauthorizedInvalid Application ID
Root Cause #
This error is flagging that your OpenAccess credentials may be incorrect — start by confirming those before looking anywhere else (see Fix #1 below).
If you’ve confirmed the OpenAccess credentials are correct and you’re still seeing this error, the actual cause in confirmed cases has been an expired, unassigned, or misconfigured OnGuard partner license on the Lenel side — not the XPressEntry Application ID or API credentials themselves. OnGuard’s error message doesn’t distinguish between “your credentials are wrong” and “the partner license behind those credentials isn’t valid,” which is why this is easy to misdiagnose as a settings problem. If credentials check out, move on to Fix #2 below.
Fix #1: Confirm Your OpenAccess Credentials Are Correct #
Check this first, per the official OnGuard integration guide (XPressEntry-Lenel-Onguard integration guide, PDF):
- Remote Computer Name — this must be the IP address or hostname of the machine hosting the OnGuard OpenAccess Service. In a typical setup, this is the main OnGuard application server itself — confirm you’re pointing at that server, not the XPressEntry server or an unrelated host.
- Username / Password — these authenticate the connection to OpenAccess and must belong to a valid OnGuard user account with an Internal Account (configured in OnGuard under Administration → Users). Note: OnGuard also supports Directory accounts here, but an Internal Account is the more commonly used and more reliably supported path for this integration.
- If you’re not sure this user account exists or is still valid, create a new OnGuard user with an Internal Account specifically for this integration rather than reusing a personal or shared login that could be disabled or have its password rotated independently.
- Once the Remote Computer Name and Username/Password are confirmed correct, use Test Connect in the Data Manager OpenAccess settings to validate the connection before re-running a sync.
If Test Connect succeeds and the error persists, or if everything above was already correct, move on to Fix #2.
Fix #2: Check the OnGuard Partner License #
- Verify the OnGuard partner license status with your OnGuard administrator or Lenel support:
- Is the partner license active (not expired)?
- Is it assigned to the correct Application ID/integration?
- If the partner license has lapsed or was reassigned, have it renewed or reassigned on the OnGuard side.
- Once confirmed valid on the OnGuard side, retry the sync/API call — no XPressEntry-side change should be needed.
If Neither of These Fixes It #
- If both the OpenAccess credentials and the partner license are confirmed correct, double-check the Application ID configured in Data Manager against what OnGuard has on file.
- Contact the Telaeris Helpdesk with confirmation of your OnGuard partner license status, your Test Connect result, and the exact error text/timestamp.
